Reagan Principles
Unquestionably, Ronald Reagan was a man guided by principle, both in his days as governor of California through his time as President of the United States. Despite achieving fame, fortune and power, President Reagan never lost sight of the things that were truly important, including his commitment to the conservative agenda. PRO-PAC seeks to carry on President Reagan’s legacy by advancing these Reaganesque principles:
Limited Government
Ronald Reagan famously quipped that “Man is not free unless government is limited.” He realized that the more power the government takes upon itself, the less effective it becomes, and the less free her citizens become. In fact, he stated that when government does step in, “it tends not to solve problems, but only rearrange them.” Americans are industrious, creative individuals, and it is a dangerous thing when we begin to cede more and more authority to an ever intrusive government for things that we can do ourselves.
Low Taxes
Just as our Founding Fathers understood that there is a limit to the government’s authority to tax the citizens, so too did President Reagan. In the face of the tax and spend Democrat controlled Congress, Ronald Reagan argued that “The problem is not that people are taxed too little, the problem is that government spends too much.” At PRO-PAC we believe that citizens work hard for the money that they earn and the government should not be in the business of taking more and more out of the people’s paychecks in order to fund unnecessary programs and pet projects. Moreover, for the economy to truly thrive, citizens must be allowed to keep the money they earn and use it as they see fit - not as the government says they should spend it.
Secure Borders
The first and primary role of government is to protect its citizens, and that means we must secure the borders. In a day and age when many around the world seek to destroy America, we must have the ability to know who and what is coming across our borders. The words of President Reagan are perhaps no more true than today: “The simple truth is that we've lost control of our own borders, and no nation can do that and survive. We ignore America's lost sovereignty at our peril.” While many around the nation want to play politics with our borders, we believe the time to act is now.
National Security
Ronald Reagan is perhaps most noted for being a President who understood the need to protect the citizenry from harm both at home and abroad. At a time when many thought the best solution was to turn the other way, President Reagan confronted the Soviet threat to America head-on. No nation goes looking for conflict, but we must be willing to step forward to protect America, her interests and her allies should an enemy seek to destroy what we hold dear. As President Reagan affirmed, “Our forbearance should never be misunderstood. Our reluctance for conflict should not be misjudged as a failure of will. When action is required to preserve our national security, we will act.”
Pro-Life
In a day when babies have become expendable for convenience’s sake, those of us with a voice must step forward to protect the most vulnerable in our society. Over twenty years ago, as more and more Americans were becoming increasingly accepting of the tragedy of abortion, President Reagan was a solid voice for life: “We have the duty to protect the life of an unborn child.”
Pro-Family
President Reagan demonstrated his understanding that the family unit is central to the development of a civilization when he declared, “The family has always been the cornerstone of American society. Our families nurture, preserve, and pass on to each succeeding generation the values we share and cherish, values that are the foundation of our freedoms.” At a time when activist judges and those on the left seek to redefine what it means to be a family, PRO-PAC seeks to be a voice for the traditional family unit, which was so essential to our development as a people.
Law and Order
President Reagan once shared, “One legislator accused me of having a nineteenth-century attitude on law and order. That is a totally false charge. I have an eighteenth-century attitude. That is when the Founding Fathers made it clear that the safety of law-abiding citizens should be one of the government's primary concerns.” Because the protection and safety of the citizens was a central concern of our Founding Fathers, PRO-PAC will seek to support those candidates and officials who demonstrate a strong commitment to the protection of the citizenry.
Educational Choice
What many people don’t realize is that President Reagan was the first president who championed the right of parents to determine how to educate their children. In fact, he advocated for the Tuition Tax Credit Bill, which was the first attempt by a president to offer a tax credit to low and middle-income families who wanted to send their children to private schools. “Diversity in educational opportunity,” stated Reagan “has been one of the great strengths of our Nation. It is a foundation of our pluralistic society and essential to a Nation which places a high value on individual freedom.”
Gun Rights
Our Founding Fathers understood that the right to bear arms as embodied in our nation’s second amendment is crucial to being a free people. Not only does the right to bear arms cover the right of the citizens to protect themselves, but the right extends also to those who use firearms both as a means of provision and to those who use firearms recreationally. At PRO-PAC we believe as Reagan did that “You won't get gun control by disarming law-abiding citizens. There's only one way to get real gun control: Disarm the thugs and the criminals, lock them up and if you don't actually throw away the key, at least lose it for a long time... It's a nasty truth, but those who seek to inflict harm are not fazed by gun controllers. I happen to know this from personal experience."
